Train Campout - September 22-24, 2017

Posted on Sep 21 2017 - 8:25pm

The troop’s first campout will revolve around the Railroading merit badge.  We’ll head out Friday night to Camp Trevor Rees-Jones to spend the night and then head to Palestine the next morning to board the Texas State Railroad.  The train will be pulled by a steam locomotive and will head through the Piney Woods of East Texas to the Rusk Depot and back again. From there we’ll head to Martin Creek Lake State Park and camp on an island!  The next morning we’ll head to Longview to board the Texas Eagle Amtrak train for Dallas.  While riding on this diesel powered train, we’ll finish off the merit badge and enjoy the comfort of a modern passenger train.  Upon arriving in Dallas, we transfer to the DART Red Line and return to Richardson via Light Rail.

We will need adults to camp/drive with us for the entire weekend so please note if you’re able to drive on the Sign-Up list.  The patrol leaders will be coordinating transportation for each of their patrols, but knowing in advance who is available will be a huge help.

The cost for all the train tickets, food, merit badge, camping, etc. will be $75.

Money Monday is Sept. 11 so that we can confirm the number of tickets to purchase.

Come join us for a fun-filled weekend riding the rails!

PLEASE SIGN UP - Patriots Day Flags In - 9/16

Posted on Sep 14 2017 - 1:26pm
We need help retrieving the flags we put out last weekend.  Please sign up using the link below to help:

Patriot Day (National Day of Service & Remembrance) is just around the corner and the young men of Troop 1001 have committed to help the Canyon Creek Homeowners Association (CCHA) remember and honor those that were killed and injured on September 11, 2001 by placing flags throughout the troop's assigned portion of the Canyon Creek neighborhood.  So, in the spirit of remembrance, service and patriotism, I look forward to the scouts of Troop 1001 meeting their commitment to CCHA.

Besides providing a valued service to the community, this is a key fund raising event for the troop, which receives a dollar for each flag distributed and, at last report, Troop 1001 is the current leader, above and beyond all other troops and organizations, in the number of flags distributed and retrieved for the CCHA.  The funds raised help defray some of the costs of the troop's activities throughout the year.

For retrieval, volunteers will gather at Trinity Bible Church (TBC) on Saturday September 16, at 08:30 AM (Please note that this is slightly earlier than in the past) to get organized and receive route assignments.  Donuts will be provided in the morning to fuel your enthusiasm, along with bottled water to keep you hydrated. The flag installation is usually completed within about three hours and we will meet to wrap up the event with ice cream.
