Canoe Trip Down the Brazos River - April 21-23!

Posted on Apr 21 2017 - 1:15pm

For those scouts that missed Monday's troop meeting, here are some highlights from Caleb & Dylan's canoe prep instruction.

Campout Agenda
  • Friday night - camp overnight at Rochelle's Canoe & Kayak Rental
  • Saturday morning - canoe instruction, pack canoes, and start paddling down Brazos!  Troop is doing the 10-mi trip across two days.
  • Saturday afternoon - lunch on the river, arrive at sand bar/island.  Primitive camping instructions and setup camp. .
  • Saturday night -dinner, free time and campfire!
  • Sunday morning - pack canoe, paddle to takeout point.  Scouts Own Service while awaiting shuttles.  Travel back to Richardson.

Packing Notes
Check the packing list on the permission slip, but here are some extra details.  Scouts need to be prepared and travel light since gear has to fit in canoes on Saturday
  • Two water bottles - stay hydrated. 1L Nalgene bottles work well.  Use carabiners to keep them strapped in.
  • Keep gear dry - use dry sacks if you have them.  Otherwise, put clothes in gallon ziplocs.  Sleeping bags, etc. in thick trash bags (troop will have extras if needed).
  • Clothing - check Graford, TX forecast.  Be prepared for warm days and cool nights.  Always bring rain gear.  Avoid cotton.  Bring swimsuit or clothes that can get wet.
  • Mess kit - plate/bowl and spoon are fine for freeze-dried meals.  Frisbees make good plates too!
  • Sunscreen & Bug Spray - no aerosols
  • Towel
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves recommended - avoids blisters
  • Small camp chair - optional
  • No cell phones or electronics!

Per BSA standards, all Scouts and adults must have passed the swimmer classification test to participate.

Update & Use Shutterfly for Troop 1001 Activity Photos!

Posted on Apr 18 2017 - 9:33pm

Troop 1001 maintains a Shutterfly account accessible to everyone at troop1001.shutterfly.com.  If you've not already done so, check it out for great pictures from many Troop 1001 campouts and other events over the past many years.

If you have or take pictures at any Troop 1001 events that you would like to share with others, please upload them to the troop's Shutterfly account for others to enjoy!  Grady will be using pictures from the account to update the Troop Handbook this summer and would appreciate help with photos at upcomign events including the following:

  • April canoe trip
  • Cottonwood Arts Festival
  • May Galveston trip
  • Summer Camp
  • The Summer PLC Planning Conference
  • Flag duty days
  • Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier, NYLT, and other summer activities
  • Oak Leaf,  OA Ordeals, and other events from this current year
  • Cross-Overs, Twilight Camp and any other outside events our Scouts worked

MAKE-UP Swim Test!

Posted on Apr 12 2017 - 6:07pm

Wednesday, April 12 we will meet at the (new location!) Tom Muehlenbeck Center (map) at 8:30pm for swim testing.

This will be the final opportunity to classify as a swimmer prior to the Brazos Canoe Campout.

Scouts and adults who are testing should be dressed to swim. Bring swim goggles if you are used to swimming with them and a towel. If you are a Plano Parks & Recreation member, bring your pass to help the troop save on fees. Scout may leave once he is signed off.

NEEDED: Scout & Adult Volunteer for Camp Cards sales at Tom Thumb THIS SATURDAY, May 1st, 5-8PM

Posted on Mar 31 2017 - 6:06pm

Troop 1001 will be selling Camp Cards this Saturday at the Tom Thumb at 5968 West Parker Road.   Our scheduled time for sales is 5-8PM.   We would like to have from 6 to 9 scout volunteers to sell cards, and two adults to man the table.  (It is ok if your scout cannot stay for the entire time.)   This is a great way to sell many cards in a short amount of time, and remember that every card sold earns a scout $5 into his own account to help pay for scouting events such as summer camp.     We also need one adult volunteer (besides Mr. Lawson) to help man the booth.
