Cottonwood Art Festival – Fall 2018

October 3-7, 2018

The City of Richardson Cottonwood Art Festival is Troop 1001’s main fundraiser.

The troop makes money 4 ways: 1) tips from the artists, 2) a payment from the city, 3) water sales, and 4) general public donations.

Each scout is requested to work a minimum of 8 hours at the festival. All time after 8 hours count toward advancement hours. Troop 1001 parents/guardians are requested to volunteer a minimum of 8 adult hours for each Scout during festival set-up and show. All hands-on-deck are additionally requested for Sunday night load-out. The entire Troop is needed to support the Cottonwood Art Festival. Sign up on-line using Sign-up Genius at:

Please open hyper-link for the required City of Richardson Volunteer Waiver. A waiver is required for every adult. Scout names are to be listed on the adult waiver under “name(s) of minor” only if the scout will be 16 or 17 during the period of August 2018 and May 2019. Print, sign and return the attached waiver at the next scout meeting.

  • Wednesday, October 3rd (6-8pm): Need about 4 adults to move trailers and supplies from TBC to our site at Cottonwood Park.
  • Thursday, October 4th (11am-8pm): Need about 12 adults to greet artists, and 40 adults – 20 scouts to setup the artists.
  • Friday, October 5th (8am-8pm):  Need about 15 adults to greet artists, and 50 adults - 30 scouts to setup the artists.
  • Friday, October 5th (6-10pm):  Need 4 adults for the Beer Garden Artist Dinner.
  • Saturday, October 6th (9:00am – 7:00pm) and Sunday, October 7th (9:00am – 5:00pm):  Need Scouts all day to sell water. Need Adults all day for Booth Sitters, the Artist Hospitality Tent, and help with artist carry-outs. Need Adult Scout Leader throughout each day.
  • Sunday Night, October 7th (5pm – 10pm) - ALL HANDS ON DECK!!! – We need everyone to help artists with load-out. We will be available for artists who request assistance until 10:00pm.

Court of Honor This Coming Monday

This coming Monday during our normal troop meeting time, we will be holding our semi-annual Court of Honor in which we acknowledge all rank advancement, merit badge awards, and other special awards.  All parents of scouts receiving any form of award are encouraged to attend.

Climbing & Fishing Campout - September 28-30

September 28-30 Troop 1001 will be going camping at Trevor Rees-Jones and Texas Freshwater Fish Hatchery in Athens, TX.  The weekend’s activities include the 60 ft. John Coffman Climbing Tower and spending Saturday afternoon at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) where we will fish, explore the hatcheries and watch a diving show.  You may bring your own fishing gear or borrow TFFC gear.

We will round it out on Sunday morning with some lessons on safe canoe handling in preparation for the canoeing campout coming up in October.

Parents: We need drivers, please register and provide the number of open seatbelts.  

If you are working on your camping or fishing merit badges, review the requirements, talk to your merit badge counselor and bring needed materials with you.

September 24 is Money MondayRegister by 6 p.m. and bring $15 per Scout (paid to patrol leader) to cover food costs.

God and Country Award, 2018-19

NOTICE, God and Country class God and Country class STARTED last week BUT IT'S NOT TOO LATE. If you still want in on it now (Award is only offered every other year), then come Monday night, September 17 at 6:00 sharp.

               

The God and County Award is a beautiful medal for completing an intensive but inspiring 5-month long Bible study.

  • 11 classes, September 10, 2018 through January 28, 2019.
  • All classes are Mondays from 6:00-6:45 at TBC, and only on regular Troop meeting nights.
  • Must be First Class rank (or very close to it) to enroll.
  • To earn the award, must attend all (or most) of the 11 classes and complete a Workbook and Bible reading schedule.
  • Extensive Bible reading, writing, and several service projects. Won't allow much time for other advancement during these five months.
  • Open to all Scouts of any faith, but the curriculum is Christian, suitable for any Christian denomination, Protestant, Catholic, or Independent.
  • Adults may participate as well.
  • This award is offered once every two years, so most Scouts have at least two or three chances to earn it.
  • Cost is $5.00 for workbook. TBC and Troop 1001 provide your medal, certificate, patch, and square knot patch.

To enroll in this year's program, please notify Mr. Grady Frank or Mr. Randy Lawson before September 8.

The first session is Monday, September 10 at 6:00 pm at the church.

Every year, Grady and Vicki Frank do an outstanding job updating and reprinting our Troop Handbook with new dollar amounts, new procedures, and new pictures of the Scouts.  Get your copy of the 2018-2019 Edition of the Troop Handbook in the box by the window in Room 1 at TBC.

Micah Richardson Eagle Scout Project - THIS WEEKEND

Micah Richardson is having his Eagle Scout project on Saturday, September 15th from 9am to 2pm and Sunday from 12-2pm at Murphy Road Baptist Church at 411 Murphy Rd, Murphy, TX 75094, just north of Renner Road.  The project will include demolition of bricks, disposal of dirt, and construction of a bench.  Please dress in Class B uniform, and bring water, work gloves, and a helmet if you have one.  Lunch will be provided.  This work counts towards service hours for advancement.
